A Kansas woman just donated a kidney to a complete stranger after seeing a message on her car.

It all started back in July of 2018, when Dawn Williams was driving in Wichita and saw a message on a car that read, “Kidney donor needed O+.”

“I went back to work and started looking for the car, so I could make the call. They answered me and said they had just gotten a kidney,” Dawn recalled.

This got Dawn thinking that she still wanted to give someone the gift of donating a kidney, which is what led her to Rose Shier.

“She was the one that God sent to me to save my life and give me a second chance to live,” said Rose, who had been on dialysis and the kidney transplant list for over two years when Dawn contacted her.

“When she texted me that she was a match, I was crying,” Rose continued. “We were talking over the phone. We were both crying over the phone.”

When Dawn thought about whether or not to donate a kidney, she said she asked herself, “Why not?”

“Other than organ donation after death, I didn’t know that you could just give away a kidney,” she explained. “So, when I learned about it and did some research and saw how many people were in need of a kidney, it just seemed like the right thing to do.”

Dawn donated her kidney to Rose on January 29, and the surgery went well for both women! The two have since become good friends, and even celebrated National Donor Day together by having a burger at Dawn’s favorite restaurant.

“It was just incredible to see how many people thought what we did was so cool. I don’t feel like it was that cool,” Dawn said. “I was just glad to do it for her.”
