Cats make great pets because they are highly independent creatures who can do a lot on their own to take care of themselves. While cats are indeed fiercely independent, there are a few things that us as cat owners need to keep them away from for their own personal safety. That’s why we’ve compiled five things that you may not know are poisonous to cats!

Lilies

While there are many plants that can prove to be irritating to pets, lilies can actually be lethal. Even ingesting a pedal or two of this flower can cause kidney failure in cats, so be sure to keep them away from your kitties.

Chocolate

Just like with dogs, chocolate is very bad for cats as well. Eating chocolate can cause seizures, tremors, and even death for cats if they consume large enough amounts.

Caffeine

The stimulant in caffeine can cause heart arrhythmia, seizures, tremors, and even death for cats. That’s why you should make sure they stay far away from your coffee!

Grapes and Raisins

If a cat eats grapes and raisins they will likely start vomiting within twelve hours. After 24 hours, they can start showing symptoms like weakness, abdominal pain, and even death. Cats who have kidney problems should especially avoid these fruits.

Bread Dough

Many people do not know that if cats eat uncooked bread dough, it can start to rise in their stomach. This fermentation process causes the production of alcohol which can cause alcohol poisoning that will require emergency surgery to save the cat.
