Last winter, someone broke into Shawn Marceau’s truck and stole various items, including his American flag. This was not just any flag, however, as it was the flag that belonged to his late 22-year-old son, Marine lance corporal Joe Jackson.

The flag had been signed by everyone in Joe’s unit right when they deployed, and it hung above his bed the entire time he was in Afghanistan. Sadly, Joe was killed while serving his country in 2011, and Shawn has used the flag to remember him ever since. This made losing the flag even harder, as it was like losing his son all over again.

“I was very upset—in a rage, because I lost it,” Shawn said.

Shawn was so desperate to get his flag back that he went public to beg for it’s return.

“Would appreciate it if all my friends could share this note. This American flag was stolen out of my truck,” he wrote on Facebook alongside a photo of the flag. “Any information would be great. No questions asked.”

The post went viral, but there were still no leads on the flag. Months went by, and Shawn began to give up hope of ever seeing the flag again. Then, on the morning of July 3, something incredible happened. That morning, Shawn went to visit his son’s grave, just as he did every Tuesday.

“It’s religion,” he said. “It’s my time to meditate and pray and get ready for the week.”

When he reached the grave, he was stunned to see the stolen flag resting on it! He recognized the flag immediately because of the signatures on it.

“It was pretty amazing,” he said.

Though many are wondering who returned the flag, whether it was the thief or a Good Samaritan, Shawn doesn’t care as long as he has it back.

“For me, it’s just a miracle,” he said. “It’s God. That’s who put it there.”
