Most athletes spend their millions of dollars in winnings on mansions or expensive cars. That’s why it’s so refreshing that a British boxer just decided to use his $9 million in winnings from a huge fight to house the homeless.

Tyson Fury spent years struggling with drug addiction and mental health problems before he became a heavyweight boxing champion, so he understands firsthand the plight of the homeless more than the average athlete does. Back in December, the 30 year-old fighter who is known as “The Gypsy King” went up against Deontay Wilder in a huge fight.

Tyson purse for the fight was $3.5 million, but after pay-per-view income came in, his grand total came to around $9 million. The champion fighter then shocked everyone by donating every penny of it to charity.

The fighter explained that he made the decision to donate the money after traveling to Los Angeles, California for a conference and being stunned by how many people were homeless on the streets of the city. While his fight with Deontay ended in a draw, Tyson later confirmed that while he had donated his entire purse to various charities that help the homeless in the United Kingdom, he did not want any praise for it.

“I did give away my last purse, but I don’t do charity work for a pat on the back,” he said when a fan asked him about it. “I do it to help people, but I do not want praise for it, I don’t want to be called a do-gooder.”

In a world where so many athletes seem to be self-centered, Tyson’s humble and giving attitude is incredibly refreshing! God bless you, Tyson Fury!
