Any father knows how stressful it is to drive his pregnant wife to the hospital when she is going into labor. For California resident Hongwei Zhang, the nerves got the best of him when his wife Ying Shi turned to him just after 3am one night and told him it was time to go to the hospital.

The couple jumped into the car to rush to the hospital, but as he hurried to get her there, Hongwei took too wide a turn as he tried to exit the highway and slammed into a concrete barrier. Thankfully, though the car was totaled, nobody was hurt in the crash.

While nobody was hurt, there was still panic after the crash, as Ying Shi could not get her door open. When Hongwei finally managed to rip the door open, he was stunned to see that the baby had arrived!

Ying Shi had given birth to a baby girl in the car! God was with the couple the entire step of the way, making sure that not only were they unharmed in the crash, but also that their baby girl was born healthy!

Dayna Dumont happened to be on her way home from working her shift at the very hospital that the couple was headed to when she saw a panicked Hongwei in the road.

“He was saying, ‘My wife, my wife!’” she remembered. “The next thing he said was, ‘The baby came!'”

Dayna happens to be a registered nurse, and while she has never delivered a baby technically, she had enough experience to help the couple out. She pulled over and rushed over to the couple’s vehicle, and she was surprised by what she saw.

“I took a peek and there was a baby,” she said. “(The mother) was in the (seat) with the baby between her legs and in her pants.”

Dayna carefully examined the baby girl, making sure the umbilical cord wasn’t wrapped around her neck.

“I didn’t think the baby had actually arrived,” Dayna added. “The mom was sitting there so calmly. I was asking, are you in any pain or discomfort, and she said no… She was just asking, ‘Is the baby OK?'”

Emergency responders soon arrived on the scene and helped Dayna cut the umbilical cord. The couple ended up naming their daughter Anna, and she is a perfectly healthy baby girl despite her unorthodox arrival into the world. Hongwei and Ying Shi are now giving all credit to God for delivering Anna safely into the world.

“First of all, as Christians, we want to thank God for keeping us safe through all of this,” they said. “Next, we want to thank all of the people who gave us help. When this happened, we thought we were all alone. But very quickly, a woman stopped to help us and called 911. Then a man stopped to assist. They were both complete strangers but they stopped to help us anyway.”
