A young woman from New Hampshire was just brought to tears after she received a thank you note from an elderly man whom she performed an act of kindness for at a supermarket.

Sonya MacMillan, 25, was about to check out at Market Basket in Nashua last week when she noticed that the 84-year-old man behind her had forgotten his wallet.

“He looked really flustered and he was like ‘oh my god I don’t have my wallet’ as I was cashing out with my groceries. I was like ‘oh you don’t have a lot you can just go on mine and I’ll pay for you,'” Sonya recalled.

The man was so grateful to Sonya for her kindness that he insisted that she give him her name and address so that he could pay her back. Sonya was not expecting to hear from the man again, so she was stunned when she received a letter from him in the mail a few days ago.

“You saved me a lot of trouble my wife was ill and I wanted to get back to her,” the note read. “I’m not very young anymore 84-years-old and it’s not a surprise I left my wallet at home. I shall always remember your kindness.”

Though the letter included a check for the amount of money she paid for his groceries, Sonya said that she will not cash it.

“I have something that I look at every morning when I leave my room it says ‘be the reason that someone smiles today’ so I see that when I leave my house,” Sonya explained. “That was what I could do to make him smile that day.”
