Two cousins were out driving on what they thought would be an ordinary night when they found themselves in a situation that they never expected to be in.

Rayfield Hallman and Steven William Wood were driving to their home just outside Cleveland, Ohio when they suddenly saw an unconscious woman with a toddler on her chest.

“I was talking on the phone and I was like, man this doesn’t look too good,” Rayfield said. “I ended up pulling back and tried to communicate with her through my car but I didn’t get a response at all.”

The little girl woke up as soon as the cousins approached her and they heard her say “Mommy!”

“Are you OK?” Hallman said he asked her. “She’s like, ‘my mommy, my mommy.’”

The cousins immediately called 911, placing the toddler in their car to protect her from the cold as they waited for police to arrive. They also found the mother and toddler’s poodle, who had escaped when they fell unconscious.

The mother has since been identified as 42 year-old Latonya Perry, who was rushed to Marymount Hospital. Doctors there found that she had suffered multiple seizures, and they are still unsure as to why.

“I’m blessed, God is so good. You saved my life,” Latonya told the cousins.

“I’m just glad I was just able to recognize the situation and be a blessing to your life,” Rayfield replied. “I’m glad you’re OK.”

The local Maple Heights Police Department also praised the cousins for their quick thinking.

“Rayfield and Steven’s decision to show concern for another person probably saved not only the woman’s life, but possibly saved the life of her daughter,” the department wrote on Facebook. “I’m sure that other people drove past and decided not to do anything, but because Rayfield and Steven decided to show a high level of character and compassion, the woman, her daughter and her dog should be fine.”

Police added that the young men have since been given Mr. Chicken gift cards “as well as a heart-felt “Thank You” for going out of their way to help someone else; showing everyone else that compassion for our fellow man is still an applicable characteristic in our world.”

We applaud these young men for saving the life of this mother and her child. We need more heroes like them. Watch the video below and be sure to share this with your family and friends.
