Police officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the rest of us. Their families are forced to make huge sacrifices for us as well, as they have to deal with the fact that their loved one may not come home every time they leave for work.

Megan O’Grady is a 16 year-old girl who worries every day when her father leaves for work. Since most other kids her age do not have to deal with this, Megan had no outlets to release the fears she had for her dad. That’s why she started cutting up police uniforms as a way of poetic justice, and it has families of others officers asking her to cut up their uniforms as well!

Megan, who lives in Cape Coral, Florida, was inspired to create Blue Line Bears after five Dallas police officers were killed back in 2016. Blue Line Bears makes teddy bears out of the uniforms of fallen officers and then hand-delivered to grieving families so that their loved ones will always be nearby.

When an officer is killed in the line of duty, Megan gets his shirt from the police department to make her stuffed bear. All the teddy bears are sewn by hand and includes a personalized badge that has the person’s last name and badge number attached to the bear’s tummy.

“I want them to be able to kind of hold a piece of their loved one again, because the shirts are obviously the most personal part of the job other than the badge itself,” Megan said.

Since 2016, Megan has created 450 bears and traveled to 34 states to hand deliver them to grieving police families.

Megan explained that the thin blue line family is incredibly strong and that they are always there for each other.

“We are all so closely related and we’re all here for each other, and I just want them to know that there are so many people out there for them who watch out for them no matter what happens and that we all genuinely love them,” Megan said.
