Sir Tom Jones was married to his beloved wife Linda for 59 years before she passed away in 2016 following a battle with lung cancer. Now, Jones is opening up about her death and revealing why he feels partly responsible for her passing.

Jones explained that he feels that he is “partly to blame” because if he had encouraged her to go to the doctor earlier, her cancer might have been caught sooner. He added that when he sings Bob Dylan’s “What Good Am I?,” which was the favorite song of him and his wife, the lyrics make him think hard about how he could have saved her.

“The song is about someone who turns their back and someone who is not seeing what is really happening. It started to mean more. It’s like, ‘Why couldn’t I have stopped it?’ Jones said. “I was reading into the lyrics thinking, ‘Jesus Christ, was I partly to blame? Should I have woken up before?’ I thought, ‘What could I have done?'”

“I couldn’t really have done anything because by the time we found out it was too late, so there’s not a lot you can do,” he continued. “But then you start to think, ‘What if I had forced her to go to the doctors?’ Because she didn’t go. You think, “S***, maybe I should have said she had to.'”

Jones said that singing this song and therapy has helped him to come to terms with Linda’s death.

“I got some of my musicians together and that was the first step. Singing has really helped me. Time is a healer,” Jones said. “Another thing about growing old that I don’t particularly like is that you lose friends. But the great thing about going on and doing something you love to do is that you start to make new friends.”

Please keep Jones in your thoughts and prayers as he continues to mourn Linda’s passing!
