Rachael Ray has found herself in hot water after her dog food brand Nutrish was hit with a $5 million lawsuit over claims that it contains the “potentially harmful” herbicide glyphosate.

The lawsuit was filed by Markeith Parks, a resident of the Bronx in New York City. He claims that Nutrish is being misleading to consumers in portraying their dog food as natural.

“These claims are false, deceptive, and misleading,” the lawsuit states. “The Products at issue are not ‘Natural.’ Instead, the Products contain the unnatural chemical glyphosate, a potent biocide and endocrine disruptor, with detrimental health effects that are still becoming known.”

Court papers say that the chemical, which is found in various weed killers, was found in the dog food in tests done by an independent lab. The papers go on to say that though the source of the chemical is not known, it could come from “crops such as peas, soy, corn, beets and alfalfa are sprayed with the chemical in order to dry them and produce an earlier, more uniform harvest.”

Nutrish was recently bought by the Smucker Company, which released a statement saying, that they “strongly stand behind the quality of our products, ingredients, and sourcing practices. As animal lovers and humans, it goes without saying that we do not add pesticides to our products as an ingredient. We plan to aggressively fight these claims.”

Ray also released a statement through a spokesman, who said that she “has always championed the great lengths Ainsworth Pet Nutrition and now the J.M. Smucker Company take to create and provide the highest quality and safest pet food products on the market.”

It should be noted that Ray herself is not a target in the lawsuit.
