Applebee’s is one of the most beloved restaurant chains in the United States. If you’re one of the millions of customers that enjoy the chain, we’ve compiled six facts about the chain that you likely did not know before!

It Began As A Mom & Pop Shop

Before there were Applebee’s restaurants all over the country, there was only one restaurant that was located in Decatur, Georgia. It was opened by married couple Bill and T.J. Palmer on November 9, 1980 after they got a $50,000 loan to open it. A few years later, they opened a second location in Georgia before they sold the company to chemical conglomerate W.R. Grace and Co in 1983. At this time, Bill became the president of the company and created the franchise we know and love today.

There Are Nearly 2,000 Locations All Over The World

In fact, there are exactly 1,878 locations in places like the United States, Puerto Rico, Greece, Honduras, Kuwait, China, and Brazil. Applebee’s employs around 28,000 people all over the globe!

It’s More Affordable Than You Think

The two for $20 menu (which includes two entrees and an appetizer to share) is one of the best deals you’ll find at any restaurant. On top of that, the majority of the entrée options, including seafood and steaks, are priced under $25.

The Busiest Location Is In New York

The busiest Applebee’s location is located right in the heart of New York City on 42nd street between 7th and 8th Avenue. This restaurant is pretty much always completely packed!

Veterans Eat Free

…on Veteran’s Day! Applebee’s wants veterans to know that their sacrifices are very much appreciated. If you bring a photo of yourself in uniform, or wear your uniform to the restaurant, you’ll be treated to a free meal on Veteran’s Day.

It Nixed Soda Off The Kids Menu

Back in 2015, Applebee’s joined other brands like IHOP, Wendy’s, Subway, Burger King, Dairy Queen, and Panera Bread in nixing soda from the kids’ menu. Soda can still be ordered upon request, but it is no longer highlighted as an option on the kids’ menu.
