Denmark: Smash Plates

In Denmark, a new year is marked by people breaking dishes, plates, and cups against the doors of their friends. Another tradition they have involves climbing up on something like a chair or table as the clock gets closer to midnight and then jumping into the new year from it.

Spain: Eat 12 grapes in 12 seconds

In Spain, there is a superstition that the last 12 seconds of the year can determine your fate for the next year. The goal of people in Spain is to quickly eat 12 grapes in the last 12 seconds of the year, with the idea that doing so will bring them luck in the new year!

Turkey: Smash Pomegranates

This messy tradition calls for people in Turkey to smash pomegranates in their doorways to celebrate the new year. It is believed there that the amount of luck that you will have in the new year is directly proportional to the number of seeds that fly out of the fruit upon impact, so be sure to smash them hard!
