A woman from Ventura, California just experienced a rollercoaster of emotions when her firefighter boyfriend faked a fire at their house to do a surprise proposal.

The proposal occurred back in November, when 30 year-old Zach Steele and his 30 year-old girlfriend Maddison Ridgik were getting ready to host a holiday party. Zach, who is a firefighter, thought that it would be funny to plant six remote-operated smoke machines in their attic before he pretended to leave the house to pick up some groceries.

“Originally I got one smoke machine,” he explained afterwards. “I went to test it and there was barely any smoke. One was not going to work, so I had to get more smoke machines.”

Since there were six smoke machines, smoke quickly spread throughout the house after Zach activated the remote, which caused Maddison to panic. Thankfully, her mother was in on the prank, and she actually called Zach while she pretended to call 911.

This gave the signal to Zach and some of his firefighter friends to rush to the scene in full gear. By the time he got there, Maddison was so panicked and emotional that she had no idea what to make of what was happening.

“I was so confused and I honestly could not sort through my emotions enough to really comprehend what was happening,” she said.

Zach immediately jumped out of the firetruck, ripped off his oxygen mask, and got down on one knee.

“I think she saw my face and calmed down, and realized what was going to happen,” he said.

“When he got down on one knee, I was so emotional,” Maddison said. “I was still shaking and crying yet so excited. It was truly the best, most indescribable moment of my life.”

Video of their proposal, which was captured on body cam, has quickly gone viral, with internet users having mixed reactions to it. Some see it as a romantic gesture, while others think he went a little too far with it.

The couple plan to officially get married on March 30 of this year, and we hope that Zach has no more fake fires planned for the ceremony!
