Fans of the 1970s singing duo Captain and Tennile, best known for their hit song “Love Will Keep Us Together” are in mourning this week after the death of Daryl Dragon. The musician passed away in hospice care on Wednesday in Prescott, Arizona at the age of 76.

Toni Tennille, his ex-wife and the other half of his singing group, was with him when he died.

“He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly,” she said in a statement. “I was at my most creative in my life, when I was with him.”

Dragon was trained in classical piano in his youth before he launched his career playing keyboard for The Beach Boys in the 1960s. He met Tennile in the early 1970s when she hired him for one of her shows, and they hit it off so much that he recommended her to The Beach Boys. She joined the band on the road, and started performing with Dragon in side gigs while they travelled.

Dragon and Tennile married in 1975, they same year they achieved international fame with their cover Neil Sedaka’s song “Love Will Keep Us Together,” a song that won the 1975 Grammy for Record of the Year. They achieved other hits in the coming years with songs like “Muskrat Love” and “Do That to Me One More Time.”

Though Dragon and Tennile divorced in 2014, they remained close friends, with her even moving to Arizona to take care of him in his final years after he was diagnosed with a neurological condition.

Daryl Dragon will be dearly missed, but he will always live on in the hearts of fans thanks to his beautiful music!
