Fans of the television show “Absolutely Fabulous” are in mourning this week after the death of actress Dame June Whitfield, who passed away last Friday at the age of 93.

Whitfield was one of the most beloved characters on British television for decades. Though she acted for many years, she was arguably best known for playing the oddball mother of Jennifer Saunders’ character Edina on “Absolutely Fabulous.”

“I will always be grateful that she agreed to be in ‘Ab Fab’ and even more grateful that she became a dear friend,” Saunders said in a statement. “She lived and worked with an extraordinary grace.”

Joanna Lumley, another star of “Absolutely Fabulous,” said she was “heartbroken to lose such a darling friend.”

Whitfield was the daughter of a telephone company executive and an amateur actress, and she said she knew from an early age that she wanted to be an actress.

“There was never one moment when I decided,” she once said. “I went to dancing classes and elocution classes and the appeal was simply that I loved it all.”

After graduating from London’s renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she started working in radio in the 1950s and quickly moved over to television as that medium became more popular. She was awarded for her lifetime of acting by being made a Dame by Prince Charles in 2017.

Whitfield was predeceased by her husband Tim Aitchison, who died in 2001, and she is survived by her daughter the actress Suzy Aitchison.

Rest in peace, June Whitfield!
