Millions of children take the school bus to and from school every day, and few of them realize just how dangerous the act of getting off the bus can be.

All school buses have flashing stop signs that are meant to let drivers behind the bus know that they need to stop to allow the children to cross the street after exiting the vehicle. Despite this, cars oftentimes ignore the stop sign and zoom past the bus, leading to the deaths of around 200 children per year.

A video recently went viral in which a Florida woman captured numerous cars breaking the law by passing school buses. The video disturbed parents everywhere, and the local police department confirmed that thirteen people ended up with citations because of it.

Now, some governments are taking drastic action to protect children exiting school buses. The province of Prince Edward Island in Canada just announced that they will revoke the license of anyone who is caught failing to stop for a school bus. Those who are caught doing this will lose their license to drive for three months and could be hit with a fine of up to $5,000.

“We all have a role to play in keeping children safe on their way to school. This change means that drivers who ignore this law are not allowed on Island roads,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar.

“No distraction is worth risking the life of a child,” added Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Jordan Brown. “I’m glad to see one more step being taken to protect our children who rely on the bus to get to school every day.”

We applaud this province for doing this, and we hope the U.S. government puts a policy like this one in place as well!
