When Martin Brown’s mother-in-law decided she wanted to live closer to her daughter and grandson, he had the perfect idea. Instead of having her live with the family, he would put her in the garage.

While that might not sound like a good idea, it turned out he was absolutely right. Rather than building a new tiny home from scratch, Martin decided to turn the 480 square foot existing garage into the perfect home for his mother-in-law.

Once the new home was finished, it was a perfect combination of the garage’s original elements and the new elements of designed that were needed to make the space feel like a cozy home.

They kept the concrete floors due to their durability and added concrete kitchen counters to the space to tie it all together. The countertops feature small elements from the original garage too. Although there are big windows and doors in the front of the tiny home, they opted not to put windows in the sides because it was too close to neighboring homes and wouldn’t have enough privacy.

Instead, the added sky lights and large windows in the roof. The bedroom loft even has a clear space in the floor so that light from the loft windows can reach into the kitchen space. The living area features a sofa that can be converted into a bed for guests and the kitchen is just the right size for one person with a small fridge and two burner stove.

The stairs leading to the bedroom loft are alternating steps so that they take up less room, but in the loft there is space for a bed, closet, and small reading nook. Outside, the home is painted a warm plum color with a concrete patio filled with tall plants for added privacy. There is a small bistro set and walkway to the home.

Check out the video below to see just how well thought out this tiny house is. I think I’d be pretty happy to live there. How about you? Share this story with your family and friends. You never know who is looking to make the perfect tiny house.
