Hollywood legend Greta Garbo spent much of the final decades of her life living as a recluse in her New York City apartment, which has barely been touched since her death in 1990. Her apartment just sold for $8.5 million, and photos of the inside of it were just released, much to the excitement of her loyal fans!

“Garbo left the full-floor apartment complete with its own private elevator entrance to her niece, Gray Reisfield, who lived in it until 2012 and left it largely unchanged,” Women’s Wear Daily reported.  “Indeed, the master bedroom is still adorned in Garbo’s favorite rose-hued Fortuny silk.”

The three-bedroom apartment is located in a full-service cooperative called the Campanile on 52nd street, and it has a breathtaking view of the East River! The home has a formal dining room, library and a living room with a balcony and a fireplace, and much of Garbo’s furniture is still inside it.

“The apartment in many respects was much as it was when she lived in it,” said realtor Woody Kerr. “That was of great interest to the people we showed the apartment to.”

“It’s very reminiscent of where she grew up in Stockholm — close to the water and with lots of sunlight,” said her great-nephew Derek Reisfield. “She liked seeing the boat traffic.”

Garbo was the embodiment of glamour and beauty but this Hollywood legend was also a mysterious recluse in her later years. The apartment is a rare glimpse into Garbo’s private life.
