The British royal family is typically known for being prim and proper, which is why it came as a huge surprise when it was revealed that they have an incredibly goofy Christmas gift tradition!

Each year, the royal family opens Christmas gifts together at teatime on Christmas Eve at the Queen’s estate in Sandringham, and they have a longstanding tradition in which they give each other gag gifts! Who would have thought?!

It turns out that the royal family has loved giving goofy gifts to each other for years. For example, Princess Anne once gave her older brother Prince Charles a white leather toilet seat. Charles saw the gift as silly at first, but since he realized how comfortable it was, he has been taking it around the world with him when he travels!

When Princess Diana had her first Christmas with the royal family, she apparently was not told about the gag gift thing, so she gave everyone cashmere sweaters, much to their amusement.

Back in 2013, Prince Harry gave his grandmother Queen Elizabeth a shower cap that read “Ain’t Life A B*tch.” Many would think that this would offend the Queen, but in reality, she found it hilarious!

During Harry’s bachelor days, before he married Meghan Markle earlier this year, his sister-in-law Kate Middleton gifted him a grow-your-own-girlfriend kit. It’s unclear whether he used this kit before meeting Meghan!

Stories like this remind us that though they are royal, the British royal family is a normal family just like any other. We hope we get a peak at some of the gag gifts that they give each other this year!
