While serving in the U.S. Army, legendary singer Elvis Presley was stationed at Ray Barracks in Friedberg, Germany from October 1958 to March 1960. Now, the German town is paying tribute to Elvis in a touching way.

Friedberg has just installed three pedestrian lights with dancing images of Elvis in order to honor the legendary rock star.

The town already has an “Elvis Presley Platz,” which translated means Elvis Presley Square, and town officials decided to add the lights as something to see for Elvis fans who travel to the town.

Elvis was already famous when he was called upon to serve in early 1958 and joined the 3rd Armored Division, but he was allowed to live with his father and grandmother off-base. Every night, he would sign autographs for fans who had gathered at the gates of the base hoping to catch a glimpse of him.

Elvis had his record company continue to release his music while he was overseas, and he had ten top 40 hits while he was in the army. Soon after he got to Germany, Elvis met 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu, whose step-father was also based in Germany with the air force, during a party at his home. This ended up changing both their lives forever, as they were inseparable during his entire deployment.

Priscilla moved to Elvis’ Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee in 1963 and the couple married in 1967, only to divorce in 1973. However, Priscilla remains devoted to honoring Elvis’ memory to this day!
