Stephen Chelf can remember when a fountain ran in his front yard and his fireplace was a cozy place to relax in his Indiana home. His family ran a successful accounting business. But over the years, things have changed for the Chelf family. He and his wife suffer severe health issues leaving them with just barely enough money to buy the necessities.

Little by little the condition of the home deteriorated. The furnace broke over ten years ago leaving just the fireplace for heat, and the pipes recently burst leaving them without running water. Their son Josh makes sure they have enough bottled water and food to get by and takes his parents to their many doctors appointments. Still, it is clearly a struggle.

That’s when a local firefighter named Scott Butrum heard about the dire living conditions the family was facing. He decided to go visit them and see what he could do to help.

He was stunned at what he saw. The house was nearly ready to be condemned. But he knew that was all they had. He began raising money to help the family and he and his wife have donated their time to help do what they can to improve the living conditions of the family.
