Drunk drivers are misguided people who are willing to risk the lives of others by driving while intoxicated. Countless people are killed by drunk drivers every year, and there is absolutely nothing funny about these situations. That’s why a judge was horrified by what she saw happening in her Michigan courtroom recently while she presided over a drunk driving case.

Last summer, 31-year-old Jerome Zirker was picking up his fiancee Brittany Johnson from work when their SUV was hit by 25 year-old drunk driver Amanda Kosal. Jerome was killed in the crash, and Brittany was hospitalized for her injuries.

When Jerome’s family were giving their victim impact statements to Amanda in court, her family was spotted laughing and joking around as they watched. When Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Qiana Lillard saw this, she knew she had to shut them down.

“Whoever can sit here at a tragic moment like this and laugh and smile when somebody has lost a family member…In the entire time that Mr. Zirker’s sister was speaking, that clown – and that’s what I am going to call him, a clown – was sitting there smiling and laughing,” the judge said.

“And you can go, too,” the judge added as she pointed to Amanda’s mother, Donna. “Because if you don’t know how to act, you can go to jail. So leave.”

And the judge did not stop there.

“This is a court of law, and these are very serious matters,” she said to Amanda’s family. “I understand you all are very upset because your loved one is going to prison – but guess what? She’s going to prison for the choices that she made. These people are here grieving, saddened because a senseless act took away their loved one, and you’re sitting here acting like it’s a joke? Not in Courtroom 502. Not today and not any other day.”

Amanda’s mother Donna continued to run her mouth as she left the courtroom, so Judge Lillard taught her a lesson she won’t soon forget.

“Your disruptive and disrespectful behavior disrupted today’s proceedings and you, ma’am, are going to the Wayne County jail for 93 days,” said Judge Lillard.

Amanda was eventually sentenced to 3-15 years in jail, while her mother’s sentenced was commuted to one day in jail after she apologized to the judge. Afterwards, Judge Lillard took to Facebook to thank the public for their support.

“Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to visit this page to express your feelings,” she wrote. “I am honored to have the privilege of serving the citizens of Wayne County. Although I am unable to respond individually to everyone, I have read all of your remarks. I appreciate all of your comments.”
