Dick Van Dyke has been entertaining us for years, and he has a very special reason to be celebrating. This last Thursday was his 93rd birthday and he’s still up and moving like he has been for years. He’s known for his beaming smile, comedic performances, and roles in films like Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as well as the television show The Dick Van Dyke Show.

He is an actor, writer, comedian, dancer, singer, and producer and his latest appearance is the new movie that is a spin off of the traditional Mary Poppins. The movie Mary Poppins Returns comes out on December 19 and is about the Banks children, but all grown up with their own children. Van Dyke plays the son of the character that he played in the original 1964 film.

Van Dyke looks exactly like the original Mr. Dawes and even recreates the dancing old man scene by hopping up on the desk all on his own. You would think he’d be slowing down a bit, but that’s apparently not the case.

Van Dyke explains that he got his break on Broadway in his memoir “My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business.” He auditioned for a small role in Bye Bye Birdie. He had no dance experience so he sang and did a soft-shoe improv dance.

The director of the film, Gower Champion, immediately went on stage to inform him that he’d just won the leading role of Albert Peterson. Van Dyke informed him that he didn’t know how to dance, to which Champion replied, “We’ll teach you.”

That role went on to win Van Dyke the Best Featured Actor Tony award. Check out Van Dyke’s interview below where he talks about the new Mary Poppins Returns movie and be sure to share it with your family and friends.
