An adorable baby white calf has found himself becoming a viral sensation this week, and he’s giving Rudolph himself a run for his money!

The baby was photographed after he emerged from the snowy woods of northern Norway with his mother, and he quickly appeared to be very comfortable in front of the camera! He is a white reindeer, which is a group of reindeer that have rare genetic mutation that strips their fur of pigment. It should be noted that these reindeer are not albino.

Photographer Mads Nordsveen was hiking with friends when he saw the baby white reindeer, and he knew immediately that he had to photograph him.

“I was walking in the mountains looking for nice landscapes for my travel photography when out of nowhere I saw this wonderful little creature,” Mads said. “He came very close to me and we looked at each other straight in the eyes. He was quite relaxed when he saw that I was calm and friendly. It was almost as if he posed for the camera.”

“He was very curious and fun. Like a little explorer,” Mads continued. “After some minutes the mother of the baby reindeer came out of trees just behind. It walked around for some minutes before running back to its mother. It was very magical and a fairytale moment.”

White reindeer calves are born in May each year, so the baby reindeer is still just a few months old. The indigenous Sami people, who live in the area, believe the white reindeer is a sign of good luck, so Mads must have a lot of luck coming his way!
