A shocking video is going viral this week showing salmon swimming on a highway in Washington state.

Drivers were stunned to see salmon swimming in shallow water on U.S. Highway 101 in Shelton. The footage was recorded by Alexis Leonard, a fish hatchery specialist.

“We kind of saw one fish dart across the road,” she said.

Alexis went on to explain that the salmon were from the Skokomish River, and that this sometimes happens when nearby creeks flood over during this time of year. She added that this is not an unusual occurrence in the area.

“If they’re lucky, it’ll meet up with the creek on the other side of the road, if they’re not they’re stranded,” Alexis said.

Alexis has worked in hatcheries since 2015, and she said that populations can explode when heavy rains force fish to cross the road.

Her video has quickly gone viral, being viewed over 8,600 times!

It’s always interesting to see how creatures like these salmon cope when they are faced with extreme circumstances like this. It’s a relief to hear that these salmons will be alright despite having to swim across the road!

“Mother Nature does a number on all her children, yet they will find their way!” one Twitter user wrote. “Salmon’s got to do what he’s got to do.”
