When we think of squirrels we usually picture the chatty little creatures that run around outside, up and down our trees collecting nuts and other goodies. But that’s not the case with one little squirrel.

When one New York City man left his apartment one day, he came home to two baby newborn squirrels on his bed. Their mother was no where to be found, but they were surrounded by nesting material.

The man immediately contacted Christina and Michael, area wildlife rehabilitators. Although they tried to get the mother to keep taking care of her babies, eventually she stopped coming.

They believe that due to construction work nearby, the mother tried to move her nest into the man’s open window, in an effort to save her family. But it didn’t work. One of the babies died not long after.

Determined to save the last baby, Michael and Christina decided that they would take her home and take care of her. Although the odds weren’t in their favor, they continuously fed and cared for the little squirrel.

They named her Thumbelina because she was so tiny. Little by little, the Eastern Gray Squirrel began growing and thriving, and now she is a full-blown healthy adult – although she does have a few odd tendencies.

Thumbelina doesn’t like to run around like a regular squirrel. Instead, she patiently walks around with her parents waiting to be cuddled. She also doesn’t like the cold or being around other squirrels.

She does, however, like eating avocado, snow peas, and arugula. She also loves watching television and staying inside where it’s warm. Although they had hoped to reintroduce her to the wild, it’s pretty clear that this little girl is going to be an inside squirrel the rest of her days.

Check out the video below to see more about Thumbelina and be sure to share this story with your friends. It isn’t every day that you get to see something like this.
