Meet Lila, a 6 year-old Labrador who the internet has dubbed “Scuba-Doo” because of the unique way she plays fetch and helps the environment at the same time.

Lila spends her days diving into the ocean to retrieve plastic from the bottom of the sea.

She was originally trained to dive for lobsters, but she has since transitioned to helping the environment.

Lila’s owner Alex Schultz, who founded the ocean cleanup group 4ocean, initially used his dog’s skills to clean his swimming pool.

Once he saw how good she was at that, he realized that Lila could be useful in cleaning up the ocean.

“I always had a pool in the backyard and Lila loved to swim,” Alex said.

“I slowly trained her to dive down to retrieve toys at the bottom of the pool. Sometimes I used plastic bottles that were filled with rocks. While we were doing a beach cleanup, she started picking up different bottles, following my lead. I immediately thought, ‘wow, we need to film this’, as she was a natural.”

Alex is hoping that the public will see what Lila is doing and realize that if she can do it, they can help the environment too.

Picking up plastic and keeping the beaches and coastlines clean is not a hard task.

“I think that if the right people are involved then it can be a fun activity,” he said.

“For example, Lila and I will turn it into kind of a training or fun project. If I grab that leash Lila is fired up. She knows we’re going to the beach.”
