Who can resist watching a turtle? Even the smallest turtles are interesting. They have amazing patterns on their backs and beautiful eyes that seem to search your soul.

So when one huge turtle found her way up onto the beach it didn’t take long for the news of her arrival to spread. Within minutes, people were showing up on the beach to take in her beauty.

Little did they know, they were seeing one of the world’s largest turtles. The leatherback turtle is the world’s largest turtle species, and this lady had come up to the beach to lay her eggs.

Thankfully, the curious onlookers gave this momma her space to let mother nature do her work. After she had taken care of business, she slowly made her way back into the water.

While it might have been easy to believe that this turtle was a male due to her size, experts say that’s not the case. Male turtles never return to the shore after being born and going into the ocean. That’s why they are much harder to study.

Instead, it is the females that are spotted as adults back on the beaches. They will travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to go back to the place that they hatched in order to lay their eggs.

These massive turtles can grow up to seven feet in length and weigh over 2,000 pounds, but that doesn’t stop them from being some of the longest traveling creatures in the sea.
