An Idaho man just scored a huge legal victory for those who believe that there is a war on Christmas in this country when a jury sided with him over his neighbors after he claimed that they discriminated against his Christian beliefs by trying to cancel his annual Christmas extravaganza.

It all started back in 2015, when Jeremy Morris moved into a house on Ferndale Drive, and he immediately started having problems with the West Hayden Homeowners Association. Jeremy is a proud Christian who loves Christmas, so at his previous home, he had a years-long tradition in which he would throw events to raise money for charity and spread his Christian faith in the five days leading up to the holiday.

Before buying their new home, Jeremy and his family notified the HOA of their plans to continue their Christmas tradition. Jeremy received a letter back from the HOA informing him that his Christmas lights would break their rules, that “some of our residents are non-Christians or of another faith” and they didn’t “even want to think of the problems that could bring up.”

Jeremy used his skills as a lawyer to conclude that he had the legal right to hold his event with or without permission from the HOA, so he decided to do it anyway. He said that neighbors harassed him after he started decorating by yelling things at him like, “Get out, this is our neighborhood!”

“Anyone who doubts that the ‘war on Christmas,’ or as I like to call it — the ‘war on Christians’ — is real in this country, they can just look to my case for proof of that,” Jeremy said.

A jury sided with Jeremy, awarding him $60,000 in compensatory damages and $15,000 in punitive damages. Jeremy is planning to use the money to move his family to a more accepting neighborhood.

“Our family will live wherever we want to live to spread the message of Jesus Christ and the birth of our savior,” Jeremy said. “We’re looking forward. We’re positive. We’re excited.”
