If you’re anything like me, you find yourself feeling cold a lot. It turns out that this is very common, especially in women. Sami Karjalainen of the VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland explained that “females are more sensitive than males to a deviation from an optimal temperature.”

Experts say that women’s bodies produce less heat than men’s, with them feeling three to 10 percent cooler. We’ve compiled six of the most common reasons why you feel cold most of the time. Scroll through these and see which one applies to you!

You have poor circulation

Poor circulation happens when you have a shortage of red blood cells in your body. Since these cells carry oxygen around your body, a lack of them causes your extremities to get tiny amounts of oxygen. This is why your feet and hands end up feeling cold.

You have an iron deficiency

Iron helps red blood cells to move oxygen around your body, so when you have less iron, you’ll end up feeling colder for the same reason listed above.

You are underweight

If you don’t have enough fat to keep you warm, your metabolism will slow down because your body thinks that it is starving. This makes your body burn less calories, which leaves you feeling cold.

You have Raynaud’s Syndrome

This rare disease causes your hands and feet to feel cold and numb in cold temperatures. The disease causes the small arteries that supply blood to your extremities to narrow, which causes poor circulation and makes you feel cold. Go to your doctor immediately if you think you might have this disease.

You’re not getting adequate sleep

Lack of sleep negatively impacts your hypothalamus, which is the part of the brain that regulates temperature. It will also negatively affect your metabolism, which can also leave you feeling cold.

You’re not drinking enough water

Dehydration lowers your blood pressure, therefore reducing circulation and slowing down your metabolism and making you feel colder. If you are feeling cold, start drinking down some water!
