It’s not uncommon for employers to claim that they treat their employees like family, but when it comes right down to it, that often doesn’t turn out to be the case. Luckily for one employee in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, his employer really does consider their employees to be family and made sure that they know just how serious they are.

Amir Adan has worked for Bobby and Steve’s Auto World for two years. Adan says he enjoys his job because the people that work there are very friendly and supportive. So when he found out that he was suffering from a genetic eye condition that could result in him being blind, he didn’t hesitate to share his worry with one of his co-workers.

Adan suffers from keratoconus, a genetic condition that causes the cornea of the eyes to become cone-shaped rather than smooth and round. The result is double or even triple vision. Luckily, there is a new surgical treatment for the condition called corneal cross-linking that could save Adan’s vision. However, because the procedure is relatively new, his health insurance refused to cover the cost of the procedure.

Just hours after telling his co-worker about the predicament he was in, Adan’s boss called him into the office to break some news to him. Bobby Williams, one of the co-founders, informed Adan that the company would be paying for his surgery to protect his eye sight.

The next day, the company’s youth foundation delivered a check for $3,500 to pay for Adan’s procedure. The company says they wanted Adan to know that they stand by his side when his insurance failed him.
