A wild turkey has just been named as the unofficial mayor of the town of Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, which he has been terrorizing for months.

Police have spent months trying to capture the turkey, who has been doing things like standing in traffic and chasing school children. Authorities are afraid the turkey, named Smoke, could cause a traffic accident or injure himself, but he has managed to evade all of their attempts to capture him so far.

“Our animal control officers are pretty good, but he has some ninja-like moves,” said Ashwaubenon Public Safety Commander Randy Tews. “They have a hard time getting him.”

While some residents of the town are annoyed by Smoke’s antics, others say that he brought “a sense of community” to the town.

“There’s other turkeys in the area, but none like Smoke,” one local resident said. “He stands out from the crowd. He really has a personality.”

“I live in Arizona, but I’m from Ashwaubenon,” said another fan of Smoke. “I LOVE following this crazy turkey! I hope the cops don’t catch him! LIVE FREE SMOKE! LIVE FREE!”

Smoke has gotten so popular that some are even referring to him as “the mayor” of Ashwaubenon.

Tews said that though many don’t want Smoke to be captured, they still need to get him.

“Nobody wants to be the bad guy,” he said. “But eventually, if it comes down to it, we’ve got to do what’s safest for everyone involved.”

However, others don’t agree with him.

“It’s a turkey, not a mountain lion,” Andrew Nowakowski, one of Smoke’s most die-hard defenders.. “There was a mother on the Facebook group complaining that the turkey chased her daughter on her bicycle as she was riding home from work. I responded to the comment — and I got some heat for this — if your child gets its a– kicked by a turkey, it deserves it. How are you going get your a– kicked by a turkey? Yes, it has chased people’s bikes, but it doesn’t get physical with them.”

What are your thoughts about Smoke? Is he harmless entertainment or do you think he could potentially hurt someone?
