A bear from Alaska has become a viral star after she was crowned the Fattest Bear of 2018 this week.

Known as 409 Breadnose, the bear is shaggy and brown, and she possibly is pregnant. The online contest was launched by Katmai National Park and Preserve as part of Fat Bear Week, and she narrowly beat out 747, a male black bear who many compared to a jumbo jet.

“Her radiant rolls were deemed by the voting public to be this year’s most fabulous flab,” park officials wrote on social media. “Our chubby champ has a few more weeks to chow down on lingering salmon carcasses before she heads up the mountains to dig herself a den and savor her victory.”

Katmai is located on the mountainous Gulf of Alaska coast, and it is known for it’s huge bears. October is the month that bears work the hardest to put on fat, as it comes a month before they head into hibernation for the winter. It’s a fun time for humans to visit, but it’s deadly serious for the bears.

“This might be entertaining, especially with these beautiful majestic animals, but this is a life-or-death struggle,” said Katmai Ranger Andrew LaValle. He added that Fat Bear Week got it’s start as a one day event in 2014, but it switched to a week-long event last year.

It seems that Breadnose did a very good job in putting on weight for hibernation! We want to congratulate her on her win, and wish her the best of luck this winter!
