Everyone dreams of winning the lottery, and many people end up teaming up with their friends and coworkers to buy numerous tickets so that they can increase their chances of winning.

This is exactly what a group of 126 NICU nurses at Mercy Children’s Hospital in Missouri did! Though the nurses did not win the grand jackpot, they did come away with $10,000. After taxes, they each came out with around $56, and they decided to do something with the money that most were not expecting them to do.

The nurses selflessly decided to give all of the money to the two people in their group who needed the cash the most.

The first nurse to get half the money was neonatologist Casey Orellana, whose husband Phil was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. The cancer quickly spread, and he had to stop working in July due to his illness. Casey and Phil are the parents to four children, and since Casey now has to take care of her family alone, she has had to cut down her work hours.

She had no idea how she was going to pay for Phil’s treatment until she got the lottery winnings!

This money is going to make a huge difference in the life of Casey and her family.

The person who got the other half of the money is nurse Gretchen Post, who is mother two three children named Hannah, Hackob and Jack. The night before the lottery, Gretchen got the worst news of her life when her 17 year-old son Jack committed suicide.

While the lottery money will not ease this mother’s pain, it will help Gretchen pay for his funeral costs. We can’t imagine what she’s going through right now, and we’re praying for her and her family.

We applaud these nurses for giving up their own winnings in order to give the money to two women who would benefit most from it!
