Being named king or queen at your high school homecoming is something that many of us only dream of. But when it happened to one Colorado student, he willingly gave up his crown to someone else.

Douglas County High School senior Brad Cooley was crowned king and Meghan Bailey was crowned queen. Meghan has a form of cerebral palsy that prevents her from speaking. So Brad felt it was only natural to do what he did.

The story starts 12 years ago when Meghan met her best friend Ian Brennan. They have been best pals since they were five-years-old. Ian has Down’s Syndrome, and everyone loves him. He and Meghan planned to go to the dance together.

So when the dance rolled around, Brad decided there was someone more deserving of being king than him. He tracked down Ian and Meghan and gave Ian his crown. “Something didn’t feel right to me. It didn’t feel like I was the one who was supposed to have it,” said Brad.

Heidi Bailey, Meghan’s mom, was in tears when she learned what Brad did for Meghan and Ian, but she wasn’t the only one. Ian’s dad, Jim, was stunned with Brad’s generous gesture.

“It was really overwhelming, so it is a very, very special night and a special memory. We’re going to hold on to that one,” said Jim. This pick me up came at a time when the family needed one the most.

Ian’s mom had passed away just two months before homecoming after a battle with liver cancer. She was Ian’s biggest fan and would have loved to watch her son be crowned king.
