Experts are now saying that closing the door before you go to bed could save your life.

A recent survey that was conducted by the safety science organization found that 60% of people sleep with their bedroom door open. Experts say that this one decision could mean life or death if there is a house fire, since a closed door can slow the spread of flames, reduce toxic smoke, improve oxygen levels, and decrease temperatures.

Since there has been an increase in use of synthetics in furniture and home construction, closing the door could make the difference in getting out with your life. In the past few decades, the average amount of time that it takes to escape a house fire has decreased from 17 minutes to only three minutes because of more flammable materials and contemporary open floor plans.

Ironically, most people who sleep with the door open do so because they think that it is safer. This is why the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI) has launched a public safety effort to raise awareness of this as part of National Fire Prevention Week, which is happening right now.

They launched the “Close Before You Snooze” campaign is trying to show people the importance of closing your bedroom door before you sleep. In one demonstration, experts showed how a fire burns in a closed room versus an open one. The side by side footage shows just how important closing the door is.
