The Bible is the most famous book of all time, and billions of people get inspired by it everyday. That’s why we’ve compiled five surprising facts about this holy book that you likely have never heard before!

Though Shalt Not Steal The Bible

The Bible is the bestselling book of all time, with 25 million copies being sold every year in the U.S. alone. What you may not know is that it is also the most shoplifted book of all time! One would think that people would think twice about violating the Ten Commandments to read this holy book, but I guess not…

Dying For A Translation

Just a few hundred years ago, translating the Bible into English could cost you your life. In the 14th century, John Wycliffe decided to translate the holy book into English anyway. Forty-three years after Wycliffe died, the Roman Catholic Church actually dug up his corpse and burned it before throwing the ashes into the river, just to punish him for translating the Bible!

On top of that, translator William Tyndale was burned at the stake in 1536 for heresy for doing the same thing!

Toughest Biblical Heroine

The toughest biblical heroine is definitely Judith, the ruthless widow in the town of Bethuliah who seduces Holofernes, the general of the invading Persian army. After getting him drunk in his own tent, Judith decapitates the general with two swift strokes of his sword. She takes his head with her and displays it on the gates as a warning to enemy forces. It doesn’t get much tougher than that!

The Bible’s Most Married Man

Though there are many polygamists in the Bible, King Solomon takes this award by far. The Bible states that he had 700 wives and 300 concubines, which means that if he were to visit a different woman every night in turn, almost three years would pass before each one saw him again.

What’s In A Name?

Though the Bible was written thousands of years ago, it is still used to name children today. In fact, over half of the top 50 baby names for boys in 2017 have biblical origins, including old favorites like James (#4) and Jacob (#10), more recent hits such as Noah (#2) and Caleb (#50), and nicknames or foreign versions of Biblical names like Jackson (#20) or Mateo (#42).
