The loss of a loved one is one of the hardest thing that someone can go through. Humans aren’t the only creatures who go through the grieving process when they lose someone close to them, animals often do as well.

In the heartbreaking video below, you’ll see an African gray parrot named Sinbad have to say goodbye to his human owner and best friend of 25 years. The elderly woman and Sinbad formed a close bond over the years, but the moment finally came for them to say goodbye to each other.

Though Sinbad is usually talkative, he’s very quiet in this video, as he clearly understands the gravity of the situation. Parrots have a strong sense of empathy and they often develop close bonds to their owners. Like humans, they often also fall into a deep depression when someone close to them passes away.

As the elderly woman lay in her bed, Sinbad dutifully stood beside her while her daughter filmed them. The parrot then hops onto the woman’s chest as she whispers to him, “I love you.”

The video has quickly gone viral, touching the hearts of people all over the globe.

“The bird knew. Our dog was never the same after the passing of our son. She passed a year after him,” one social media user wrote, another adding, “I really hate people who say animals don’t have emotions when they do. It’s called animal instinct and you can clearly see the beautiful bond between these 2.”

“That’s the sweetest and saddest thing I’ve ever witnessed… May she rest in peace,” a third person wrote.
