A man who was left disfigured after he received a surgical procedure to help him fight cancer was devastated when he was recently discriminated against at a convenience store in Walterboro, South Carolina.

Kirby Evans, 65, had stopped in at Forks Pit Stop to get donuts and a drink, and he had just sat down to enjoy them when the manager approached him.

“Next thing I know, she jerked me into her office,” Evans said. “The words that came out of her mouth hurt me so deep.”

Evans said that the manager told him that his facial scars were scaring customers away, and that he would need to cover his face if he was going to remain in the store.

“How can a person eat anything with his face covered?” he asked.

Evans has had to deal with people staring at him for the past seven years, ever since he had surgery to remove basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, from his face. He had his left eye and entire nose removed in order to save his life.

Evans can’t afford reconstructive surgery, and he can’t wear an eyepatch because the skin around the area is so sensitive. While he has accepted the way he looks, he still left the store in tears.

Evans’ enraged daughter took to social media to reveal what happened, and her post went viral. Soon after that, a woman who claimed to be the manager responded to the public post and stood by her actions.

“I run a food service business where people dine in,” she wrote. “I do not see absolutely anything wrong with what I did. He would come in at lunch time and sit at the food booths right at my busy time everyday. I have bills to pay to and I work very hard to please my customers.”

Evans said he decided to go public with his story in the hopes that others can “find it in her heart to treat people with disabilities in a different manner. We don’t want to be treated like that. We are human beings.” While he won’t be going to this store again and has yet to receive an apology, he’s been welcomed with open arms at his local Dairy Land.

“When you spend your money at somebody’s place of business, you should be welcomed just like this man that owns this place here welcomed me,” he said. “I’m welcome. This is my table.”

We can only hope that this manager will apologize for this atrocious act. Find out more about this in the video below.
