Last month, Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc on the Carolinas. While humans were obviously affected by this, animals were impacted as well, and local animal shelters found themselves inundated with lost pets.

A Maltese named Soshe was one dog who did not make it out of her home in Burgaw, North Carolina in time to beat the storm. Her owner called animal control to let them know that she was trapped alone in the home. When the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) heard about Soshe, they wanted to find her badly. However, since her neighborhood was underwater with only the roofs in view, they were not able to locate her home.

As the water rose around her home, Soshe had no other option but to take refuge on a wet couch that floated around the floodwaters for days. When the floodwater levels in Burgaw finally began to drop, the HSMO stepped in and went about trying to find Soshe. Exactly one week after the storm hit, Soshe’s house became visible, and HSMO was finally able to identify it.

As the team got closer to the house, they heard barking and whimpering, and they realized that Soshe was still inside alive fighting for her life. In the video below this story, you’ll see Soshe be rescued, and her reaction to realizing she’s been saved is priceless!

Chad Gard and Jessica Crampton were two of the team members who were part of Soshe’s rescue.

“Once we got it open a little bit, Jessica saw the dog sitting on top of the couch that was sitting in the living room,” Gard said. “We got the door open far enough so Jessica could get inside.”

“That was a good day,” he continued. “We had boat problems and anything that could’ve went wrong did. And in the end, it was a fantastic day. We all felt really good.”

Soshe’s family has not been able to make it back to Burgaw yet, so a friend has taken custody of her until they get back to the area. Check out her rescue for yourself below!
