Tony Alsup is a 51-year-old trucker from Tennessee, and when the severe weather hit the east coast, this trucker jumped into action. He drove all the way to South Carolina, but not for the reason you might think.

Tony drove hundreds of miles in a school bus to fill it with dogs and cats from animal shelters that were in the path of Hurricane Florence. Although the storm was downgraded to a tropical storm, the flood waters have devastated the east coast.

With the storm still a few days from making landfall, Alsup drove to shelters in four South Carolina towns and loaded up 53 dogs and 11 cats and took them to safety.

This isn’t Alsup’s first rescue either. Over the past year he’s hauled shelter pets out of danger in Texas, Florida, and even flew to Puerto Rico to rescue more animals there.

In a Facebook post last Sunday, the Saint Frances Animal Center posted that Alsup was rescuing all the “leftover” pets that the shelter couldn’t place.

“The ones that no one else will ever take, and he got them to safety,” said the post. “Not the most conventional evacuation, but surely the one with the most heart.”
