The entire world was stunned back in 1996 when Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced. The details of this royal divorce were especially scandalous due to Charles’ years-long affair with Camila Parker Bowles.

In 1989, Diana confronted Camila. Charles and Diana separated in 1992, and he publicly admitted to his affair in 1994. The entire royal family was impacted by this major scandal, but newly-surfaced letters have shown that at least one of them took Diana’s side. Though there were longstanding rumors that Prince Philip and Diana did not get along during her marriage, these letters show that he was there for her during her divorce.

The letters, which were leaked by former royal butler Paul Burrell, show that Philip took Diana’s side over his son Charles in the divorce.

“I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla,” Philip wrote in one letter. “Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position. We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”

However, Philip is not kind to Diana in all of the letters. In one of them, he wrote, “Can you honestly look into your heart and say that Charles’s relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behaviour towards him in your marriage?”

Despite this comment, Diana regularly wrote to Philip during her divorce to ask for his guidance. It’s nice to see that Philip was there for Diana when she needed him most!
