It seems like lately there have been a bunch of food recalls. Everything from cereal to ground beef seems to have been contaminated with something. Now Cargill Meat Solutions has recalled ground meat products from all Publix locations due to contamination with E. Coli.

To begin with, only illnesses had been reported, but the recall has since taken a deadly turn. The Colorado-based company issued another recall for 132,606 pounds of ground beef this week. So far, 17 individuals have become ill and one fatality has been confirmed.

The recalled meat is from the chuck part of the carcass and was packaged on June 21 and distributed to retailers across the nation. The USDA inspected the packages and an inside stamp reads “EST. 86R.”

If you have ground meat in your freezer you should check for the manufacturers name, the USDA inspection stamp, as well as the date it was produced. Consumers who have purchased the products are encouraged not to eat them. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

To protect yourself from illness from any meat, always use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. The temperature should reach at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit to eliminate bacteria that can cause illness.

Always wash your hands after handling raw meat and eggs as this can reduce the risk of bacterial cross contamination to other food and kitchen surfaces.

If you think you have eaten the recalled meat, you should contact your doctor right away. Although symptoms may not appear for up to ten days, most people become sick within three to four days.

Symptoms include diarrhea (often bloody), fever, stomach cramps, and vomiting. For more information about the recall, visit fsis.usda.org. Be sure to share this warning with your family and friends.
