Artificial intelligence (AI) is completely changing the medical world for the better, and it is already saving the lives of vegetative patients all over the world.

A team of China’s best neurologists just came together to compare their assessments of seven comatose patients in Beijing with that of an AI system. The seasoned doctors rated the patients on a coma recovery scale and gave each of them very low scores, indicating that they did not believe any of them would wake up, meaning their families could legally take them off life support.

The AI system, which was designed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and PLA General Hospital, completely disagreed with the neurologists and gave each of the patients high scores that indicated that they would wake up within twelve months.

The AI system ended up being right in the end, as all of the patients woke up within a year!

This system has an astounding 88% success rate of diagnosis which is due to its ability to see “invisible” details in hundreds of human brain images. This is in contrast to the way doctors currently assess comatose patients, which is based on subjective reactionary tests and judging certain factors, such as age and the condition of the brain.

“We have successfully predicted a number of patients who regained consciousness after being initially determined to have no hope of recovery,” said the researchers in a statement. “At present, there are more than 500,000 patients with chronic disturbance of consciousness caused by brain trauma, stroke, and hypoxic encephalopathy with an annual increase of 70,000 to 100,000 patients in China, which brings great mental pain and a heavy economic burden to families and society.”

“The possible prediction of the recovery of patient consciousness will directly affect the choice of clinical treatment strategies, and even the choice of life or death by the patient’s relatives,” the team concluded.

We can’t wait to see the future lives that are saved from this amazing technology!
