Allison and Josh Lewis always knew they would want children, but they thought two or three would be plenty. Little did they know that God had a much different plan in store for them.

The couple’s love story began in 2000 and after getting married, they had four biological children. But the couple says that God opened their eyes to the needs of other children and they chose to adopt a child from Africa.

Still, God wasn’t done with them. They had mentioned to a friend and adoption attorney, Janet, that they were thinking about adopting another child. It wasn’t long before they got a phone call that would change their lives yet again.

Janet had run into a woman that was pregnant with a baby boy, but couldn’t keep him. The couple turned to God for guidance. Although they knew having six kids in the house would be chaotic, they eventually decided that this baby boy was meant to be their son.

They packed their bags and headed to North Carolina where the birth was set to take place. On the way there, they got another phone call. It was Janet. She said, “Does Josh have both hands on the steering wheel?”

It turns out that the ultrasound had revealed that there wasn’t just a baby boy, but their little boy had a twin sister as well. The couple was shocked with the discovery but decided that they were going to take both of them.

However, another phone call revealed that the prognosis for the baby girl wasn’t good. She might not even make it past delivery. Ava would be born without brain matter. She had a spinal cord, but not much else. Sam, her twin brother, was fine.

Although Allison and Josh knew that they would be spending lots of time back and forth to the hospital, Ava was going to be part of their family and they would do whatever they could to make her comfortable.
