Earlier this month, 30 strangers came together to save a grandmother’s home from being condemned by the city of Independence, Missouri.

Gina Gibson had come to terms with the fact that she was four weeks away from losing her home, which needed siding and gutter repairs on top of issues with her garage. Gina was resigned to her fate, until she woke up one morning to see dozens of strangers in her yard ready to work!

“I was kind of not believing in people anymore and this just restored my faith in people,” Gina said. “It’s pretty cool.”

The city was preparing to condemn Gina’s home after her neighbors complained about it.

“We got letters,” Gina said. “There was a neighbor complaint that things weren’t up to code and it was more than what we could afford, so we just asked for help.”

In a last ditch effort, Gina asked her community for help, not thinking that anyone would actually take the time to do anything. She was proven wrong when members of the Claycomo Ford Plant’s UAW 249 motorcycle committee stepped in to repair her home for her! They arrived at her house with tools, supplies and enough people to fix her siding and gutters.

“When we heard about this we knew we had to step in,” Gary Thomas said. “This world needs helpers. It really does.”

Gina was touched by this gesture and said she just wants a place for her family to visit her.

“I just need a place for the kids to go to Grandma’s. That’s important,” Gina said.
