The Selkirk Rex breed dates back to 1987 in Montana where a feral cat gave birth to a litter of five kitten. The breeders noticed that one of the kittens had a thick, curly coat of fur.

After some research they discovered that this was a dominant trait that resulted from a spontaneous genetic mutation. Unlike her relatives like the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex, this kitten had a significantly thicker coat consisting of three layers of fur.

This genetically distinct line of cat has now been recognized by the International Cat Association, the American Cat Fanciers Association, and the Cat Fanciers’ Association.

Some people call these adorable kittens poodle cats, and others refer to them as a cat in sheep’s clothing. Which is actually pretty appropriate considering their fur looks so much like wool.

While all animals produce dander, these cats produce much less. But don’t get excited about adding one of these dolls to your household. Because they are a new breed and really popular, the Selkirk Rex breed will likely put quite a dent in your wallet.

You can expect to pay $500 to $800 for these kittens and the price can vary depending on the color of their coat, birth order, gender, size, lineage and show status.
