A waitress was working her normal shift at a coffee shop when a 10 year-old boy came in and sat at one of her tables. The waitress was immediately annoyed, as she assumed the little boy was not going to spend very much money, and that he would not give her a big tip.

Already irritated, the waitress walked over to the boy’s table and put a glass of water down in front of him.

“Miss, how much is an ice cream sundae?” the boy asked her.

“Fifty cents,” she replied briskly.

The boy thought for a moment and then asked how much a regular ice cream cost. The waitress was becoming very impatient with the boy now, as there was already a line of people out the door, and she wanted to get rid of the child so that she could bring in more customers.

“A plain cup of ice cream is 35 cents,” the waitress told the boy.

The boy ordered the regular ice cream and handed her his menu with a smile. She returned with the ice cream and the bill minutes later and handed it to him without saying a word.

The boy quietly ate his ice cream, paid his bill, and left.

The waitress was relieved when she saw the boy leave, and she went over to clear his table. When she got there, however, she saw something that had her feeling touched and saddened. The boy had left her a 15 cent tip, which was all the rest of the money he had! He could have ordered the 50 cent sundae and left her no tip at all, but he decided to have a regular ice cream just to make sure she got paid.

The waitress was overcome with guilt about how selfish and rude she had been to the boy.
