A theme park in France has just added an unlikely group of freelance employees to their grounds team.

The Puy du Fou theme park in western France is employing six birds to collect and dispose of garbage, which is mostly discarded cigarettes and other small pieces of trash. The birds are then paid in food! Once they take the trash to special bins, they receive food in exchange for the litter.

“The park is very clean,” said park president Nicolas de Villiers. “The purpose of the crows … is to educate the people, to open their minds, to think, ‘OK, the birds are able to do something that we are much more able to do than them, so we should do this by ourselves.’”

Corvid birds like crows, ravens, magpies, and rooks are known for being some of the most intelligent animals on Earth. They have extremely impressive skills in problem solving, tool making, and deductive reasoning skills.

The birds are helping to inspire humans who come to the park to pick up trash themselves. On top of that, the birds are very much enjoying their job!

“It became a game for them,” de Villiers said. “They pick up the papers on the floor, and they are rewarded.”

This is such a unique idea that seems to also be very effective! Hopefully other theme parks around the world will look into hiring a team of birds as well!
