All parents worry about their child fitting in to school, and when that child has special needs, the anxiety is even greater. Luckily, at small schools, like Wayne Community Schools in Iowa, everyone knows everyone so they tend to look out for each other a little more.

When Angie Sloan’s daughter, Chelsea, was ready to start school, she worried about how she would fit in. Chelsea has Down’s Syndrome, but it didn’t take long for her to have a big group of classmates watching out for her.

So when Chelsea was a senior, she was ecstatic to be named to her high school’s homecoming court. Angie says that Chelsea was so excited that she literally told everyone she saw.

They went dress shopping, did her hair and nails, and Chelsea even decided to wear a bit of makeup. Unbeknownst to either of them, the greatest joy was still to come.

When the king and queen were announced at the homecoming coronation, Chelsea was simply excited to be standing up there with everyone. She was happy when her classmate, Katie Gassman, was crowned queen.

But Katie had something else in mind. The announcer came over the loud speaker and said that Katie had handed her a letter before the event, and the woman reading the letter struggled to read the heartfelt words.

Katie said in the letter that she was honored to be chosen queen, but that she wanted to share her crown with another girl who always has a smile on her face and has overcome so many hardships.

Katie then removed the crown from her head, walked over to Chelsea, and placed it on Chelsea’s head. Overcome with shock and joy, Chelsea’s mouth dropped open and the crowd cheered.

Katie then led Chelsea over to her spot by the king. Angie’s mother took to social media to share the story with very heartfelt words. “This wonderful, selfless young woman chose to share her crown with Chelsea. There really are no words that can describe how I feel,” she said. “We are so fortunate to live in such a loving community.”
